Holy moly!!!!!!!! Ok so Rachael and I moved up to the twin cities yesterday. We were going, we had probably been going about an hour in our 4-car caravan, when all the sudden, Steve gets pulled over. Not too tragic, I know, but just wait. That is only the beginning of this dramatic and frightening saga. He gets a $90 ticket for not having his license plate up-to-date. We stopped twice on the way up (we left at 7 a.m., so we stopped for breakfast). When we got to our exit off of 494W, we lost the back to cars (which happened to be my grandpa in his truck with all my stuff and my mom/grandma in the back car). They were lost, driving around trying to find us at the apartment for about an hour and a half. By the time they found us, we had totally unloaded Rachael and her stuff, set up her bed and futon and she had even started to unpack.
We unloaded my things, set up the furniture, and finally went to eat lunch at about 2:15. After lunch, we went to buy groceries. When we got home, organized the kitchen and then everyone took off at around 4. Rachael and I continued to unpack til about 7:30, when we went on a Wal-Mart run for basic things we had forgotten. We got home an hour later, split a box of velveeta mac and cheese, and did some little things til 11-ish, when I fell asleep. Being very hot outside, Rachael and I had three fans going, plus the ceiling fan. HERE’S WHERE THIS STORY GETS CRAZYY!!!!
Ok at approximately 3:03 this morning, I woke up, hearing a rattling in the kitchen, front door area. 30 seconds later, a huge thunderstorm starts up outside. It was insane. Rachael woke up a few minutes after the storm started, and about 30 seconds after that, the power went out. We both were up, and were freaked out. I still thought I heard noises coming from the front door. It was very weird- Rachael got our her cellphone and was walking into the hallway to go check outside, and after going two steps outside the bedroom, she paused, after hearing MORE noises coming from the front door area. She got freaked out, and came back in the room, closed the door, and got under her bed. Us being smart and moving in yesterday, we had not brought the flashlight into the bedroom and didn’t want to leave the bedroom when we couldn’t see anything. To add on to this, we had opened the blinds and all we could see through the heavy rain was one truck with its lights on, just hanging out in the parking lot right outside our apartment. Rachael and I were thoroughly freaking out, thinking there was someone in our apartment and not knowing what to do, being that it was now about 3:30 in the morning.
We waited for 15 minutes in silence with the occasional whisper back and forth and when the storm had settled down and we stopped hearing noises in the apartment, what do ya know, the truck pulled away. Feeling a little safer, but still waiting 10 or so more minutes, we went out together with both of our cell phone lights ahead of us. The front door was closed and we went right for the flashlight in the kitchen drawer, which perfectly wasn’t working. So… we searched the entire apartment under couches, in the closets and in all possible places someone could be, with our cell phone lights. Realizing that nobody had been in our apartment, we felt a little better, but still, with no power, and no AC (it was stinkin’ hot!), we talked for an hour and a half or so before falling back into temporary sleep. I was in and out of sleep every 20 minutes for the following 5 hours.
Getting up 2 hours earlier than I was planning to, but not being able to stand the sweat dripping off of myself, I got up and decided to take a shower. With no lights, I kept the door open, and grabbed all the candles we had to put them in the shower so I could see kind of what I was doing. Jumped in the shower and sure enough, yep, no hot water. I froze like an icecube. Rachael got up earlier too and we tried to call the front desk for 2 hours, getting no answer. Finally after a morning of freaking out, we went there in person and there was a sign on the door that said “Not open til electricity is back on”. Ok, we thought, ummm guess we can’t do anything about this. So we went back to the apartment and 30 minutes later (12 noon) the power finally came back on. HALLELUJAH!!!!!
After a night of being scared out of our minds and losing power during our first night in our apartment, lacking sleep but having interviews starting at 1:30 p.m., we definitely had quite the first day. Rachael and I are still pretty sure someone was trying to open our front door and break in, but praise God that Rachael had remembered to put the chain lock on before jumping into bed. We have come to the conclusion that the devil DOES NOT want us here in Minneapolis. That’s exactly why we’re going to stick around.

Welcome to Minneapolis!
Kirsten & I'll have to have you guys over for dinner sometime.
BTW, this Thursday afternoon is a special time at the Phelps Park Boys & Girls club. If you can make it, email Casey Foss (caseyafoss at yahoo dot com) to RSVP.
Hmmm... don't mean to make you feel any worse... but I'm pretty sure that chains on doors can be easily broken or un-fastened if worked on for as long as you heard noises. I'd say God was working in your favor last night keeping those people out of your apartment...
yes, I know that they're easy to take off, but it would have been pretty loud, and by that time, I'm sure they knew that Rachael and I were up- but yes, Praise God that nothing happened! Our angels were watching out for us!
