Well, yesterday was car accident #2 of the past 2 weeks. It is so strange how these happened so close together, when I have never had car problems, gotten a ticket or anything before now.
Yesterday I had gone to campus to pick up a few students from the Rock and we were headed to our friend Kia's house to decorate Christmas cookies. We were on a pretty busy street, stop lights and such, and I was going about 32 mph (it was 35) and out of nowhere, a car runs a stop sign, going at least 35 and I couldn't stop in time. The front of my car was demolished into the passenger's side of his car. Thankfully there were no passengers, just the driver. We moved both our cars onto the side of the road (mine barely being willing to move) and the car that was directly behind me stopped to make sure everyone was ok. He called the police and stayed for about 5 minutes, then had to go to work, but he left his business card with Luke (one of my passengers) to give his info to the police in case they needed another eye-witness. The police came about 13 minutes later, after I had time to call my dad and my insurance company. The guy who ran the stop sign didn't speak English very well, but I managed to get his license and insurance info to share with my insurance company.
The cop came and said we were very lucky to have gotten in an accident where the person actually stopped (and didnt just drive away) and that he had insurance, because apparently we were in a pretty bad part of town. We exchanged all our information and then the cop and the other guy left, leaving the 3 of us to wait for a tow truck to come and tow my car. We got that all take care of, made it to Kia's house and I spent my afternoon talking to my insurance and dad, until I had to go to work at 6:30.
I just got back from Enterprise, where I got a rental car to use for the next week or so. It's a black Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5-- nice car! Thankfully none of us were physically hurt, although I'm sure we'll all feel a little whiplash in the next few days. I am hoping that it will be 100% the other guys' fault, although Ian, my insurance go-to-guy, said that in cases like this, since Minnesota is no-fault, there's a good chance I'll be 10% responsible for it, because (these are his words): according to state law, technically everyone is supposed to slow down when coming to any intersection, in the event that someone runs a stop sign. Hmmm I didn't know that was a law... and I don't think I've ever met anyone who abides by that law, but that is what the other guys' insurance might try and pull to get me to be 10% responsible. Hopefully not, but time will tell.

What a bummer! The worse part is, probably no matter whose fault it is, the insurance company can probably use it as an excuse to raise your rates!
